Clearly all of this new snow is having a major impact on our local ski resort Heavenly in Lake Tahoe. “Wow that day made the Christmas Holiday look like a weekday” according to my husband Tom, Heavenly Director of Base Operations. Then this last weekend (Feb./6-7) Heavenly had one of its busiest days of the year so far-yes beating out the holidays. The people keep coming-thank you so much mother nature for all of our snow as Heavenly Ski Resort of Lake Tahoe is having an Epic Winter
Lake Tahoe gained 7.89 billion gallons of water from the Friday/Saturday storm 1-30-1/31, the National Weather Service estimates. The snow-water equivalent as of 9 a.m. Saturday, McGuire said, stands at 133 percent of average for the Lake Tahoe basin. The article is posted here by Fox News. Today is February 8th and now the forecast has nothing but sunshine of course this isn’t a bad thing but hopefully this will change quickly. I just looked at Weather Underground and the next storm is slated for February 17th which is great.
I wonder if the sunshine will slow down traffic here in town for the next week-probably not. The traffic has been a topic of conversation as well among locals with all of this snow. We have learned that on Sunday afternoon it is best to not leave your house if you can help it-yes that bad. Traffic has been backed up on all roads-somehow the local road secrets have been leaked-thanks to GPS. Think how much easier it would be if you just had a house here and you didn’t have to check out of a hotel every weekend with the other 2000+ people. I know a good Realtor. (me of course)
So as Heavenly is having this epic winter it is also so great for the local economy as the snow is dumping dollars into South Lake Tahoe. How many of you go to Basecamp Pizza? Did you know that is the busiest restaurant in town and the numbers are astounding. My husband and I would like to go there but we know there will be an hour wait no matter what day of the week it is or time of the year.
So Heavenly’s epic winter will be coming to an end with a closing date set for April 24th this year-I wonder if they will extend the season? Skiing and snowboarding in May could be pretty fun. I just hope the snow continues and we get a huge end of Feb. March and April. I was just talking to a ski patroller the other day and he told me they are under staffed, since the mountain hasn’t been 100% open in 4 years no one was ready for it. I am sure they are making the best of it and I know they are all working hard for us to make the mountain safe for us.
